Synchrony ObservatoryThe mirror clock
Record repeated times and see if more appear than you would expect from simple exposure to the watch.
Build a small record that separates the impression of “seeing it continuously” from the frequency actually observed.
The times 11:11, 22:22, or 12:21 seem special because they are visually memorable. The mission turns that intuition into a reproducible observation and teaches how selective attention and the base rate work.
- 1
Choose two fixed times of day to write down every time you voluntarily look at the time; do not increase the frequency of consultation.
- 2
For seven days it records all the hours observed, not just the striking ones.
- 3
Then mark which ones are repeated, symmetrical, or personally significant.
- 4
Calculate what percentage they represent and compare the first three days with the last four.
- 5
Write two alternative explanations before interpreting the pattern.
A table of observations and a conclusion of 80 to 250 words that includes total frequency, pattern frequency, and at least two possible explanations.
- Did you remember coincidences better than normal hours?
- Did the frequency of paying attention change?
- What data would you need to defend a causal explanation?
