QUANTUM CAUSALITY

The chronology protection

Stephen Hawking surmised that physical laws prevent the appearance of macroscopic closed time curves, keeping the universe safe for historians.

Chronology protection and quantum barrier

The conjecture

General relativity allows for acausal geometries, but many require idealized conditions. Hawking proposed that quantum effects become decisive just when a temporal machine tries to form and destroy or block the configuration.

The chronology horizon

It is the boundary between a causal region and another that contains loops. Light rays can repeatedly approach closed paths, increasing the energy of the fields. The feedback of that energy on the metric could grow until invalidating the original geometry.

Why is it still conjecture?

Semiclassical calculations find divergences or large feedbacks in numerous models, but depend on quantum state, geometry, and approximations that fail near the Planck scale. A general proof requires a complete theory of quantum gravity.

Defense in depth

In addition to feedback, there are instabilities, exotic energy requirements, horizons, and difficulties in creating the appropriate topology. No single obstacle constitutes a universal prohibition, but together they drastically reduce the space of physical possibilities.

Why it matters

Causality underpins the predictive capacity of physics. Investigating its protection reveals what principles are missing when classical relativity and quantum theory conflict.
