Speed time dilation
Moving at speeds close to the speed of light causes a clock to accumulate less time than another that follows a different trajectory. It's the proven way to travel into the future.
Each traveler's own time
Special relativity replaced the idea of universal time with a magnitude associated with each trajectory: the own time. Two observers can start from the same event, travel different paths through space-time and meet again showing different durations on identical clocks. No one feels that their clock is running slowly; The difference appears when comparing the complete trajectories.
For uniform motion, the Lorentz factor increases as the speed approaches that of light. At everyday speeds the effect is minuscule. Near the relativistic limit, a ship could experience months while years pass on Earth. This is neither a visual illusion nor a signal delay: when they meet again, the clocks retain a physical difference.
The twin paradox
The popular version imagines a twin who travels on a ship and returns younger. It may seem that each should consider the other's clock slower, but the trajectories are not symmetrical. The traveler changes frames by accelerating, turning around and returning; The person who remains on Earth follows another line of the universe. In relativity, the duration is calculated over the entire route and does not depend on verbally choosing who "moves."
A proven prediction
Kinematic dilation has been measured with unstable particles, transported clocks, and fast ion spectroscopy. Navigation systems and optical clock networks also incorporate relativistic corrections. The experiment does not consist of observing a fictitious ship, but rather of comparing frequencies and durations with a precision capable of detecting the factor predicted by Lorentz.
What would require an appreciable time jump?
- Reach an extreme fraction of the speed of light.
