ROTATING COSMOLOGY

Gödel universe

In 1949, Kurt Gödel showed that Einstein's equations admit a rotating universe with closed time curves. His model is crucial as a counterexample, not as a description of our cosmos.

Gödel's rotating universe

A universe that tilts the cones of light

Gödel's solution contains homogeneous matter, a cosmological constant, and global rotation. At sufficiently large distances, rotation tilts the causal structure to allow routes that return to the traveler's past. There is no need to locally overcome the light.

Why was it revolutionary?

Gödel demonstrated that the equations of general relativity do not by themselves guarantee universal time nor do they exclude all circular chronology. The result reinforced the idea that past, present and future depend on geometry and the observer.

Why don't we live in it

Cosmological observations describe an almost homogeneous and isotropic expanding universe, without the global rotation of Gödel's model. Its material content and evolution also do not coincide with the standard cosmological model. It is an exact and pedagogical solution, not the map of our universe.

The deep lesson

A physical equation can admit worlds that the initial conditions of nature do not select. To evaluate a time machine you have to ask both “is it a solution?” such as “can it be formed, is it stable, and does it agree with observations?”

THE NEXT JOURNEY BEGINS WITH A QUESTION

You cannot return to the past. But you can change how you inhabit time.

Go beyond equations and explore what time reveals about your identity, your freedom and the responsibility of every choice. Five lessons connecting philosophy, consciousness, paradoxes and ethics.
