Quantum gravity

Relativity explains geometry and quantum theory explains microscopic matter. A time machine forces both to intervene at the same time, just where we still don't have a complete theory.

Quantum gravity and microscopic geometry

Why is it needed?

General relativity treats spacetime as a continuous classical geometry. Quantum theory describes fields with fluctuations, superposition, and probabilities. Near singularities, chronological horizons or Planck scales, ignoring either of the two is no longer reliable.

What could happen with a temporary machine

As the formation of an acausal region approaches, light paths can repeat and concentrate energy. The expected value of the quantum energy–momentum tensor can grow and deform the geometry that the loop was intended to create. This semiclassical mechanism is one of the candidates to protect causality, although it does not constitute a universal demonstration.

Research programs

String theory, loop quantum gravity, asymptotic safety, and other approaches attempt to describe the fundamental regime. They do not yet offer an experimentally confirmed answer about travel to the past. Some suggest that certain topologies are prohibited; others allow models under very special conditions.

Time as an emerging phenomenon

In several formulations, habitual time does not appear as a fundamental variable in the same way as in classical mechanics. It could emerge from correlations, entanglement or macroscopic approximations. If this is correct, “time travel” may be a poorly phrased question at the deepest level.

What do we know

Relativistic time dilation is confirmed. The creation of macroscopic causal loops does not. Quantum gravity marks the border between these two territories and avoids presenting a mathematical possibility as close engineering.
