CAUSE AND EFFECT

Retrocausality

Retrocausality studies models in which a future condition participates in the explanation of a past process. It is not automatically equivalent to sending a controllable signal back to yesterday.

Retrocausality and quantum propagation towards the past

Two ideas that should be separated

It is one thing for the mathematical description to use initial and final conditions; another, that an agent can encode a message and send it to his past. Many retrocausal models reproduce quantum correlations without allowing backward signaling.

Time symmetry

Several microscopic equations are almost symmetric under time inversion, while our experience shows an arrow associated with the increase in entropy. Retrocausal interpretations explore whether the future state can act as a boundary condition without altering observable statistics.

Entanglement is not temporary communication

Quantum correlations violate Bell inequalities, but the non-signaling theorem prevents using them alone to transmit information faster than light or back in time. Correlation does not mean message channel.

Paradoxes of intervention

If a future signal allowed the condition that originated it to be changed, an inconsistency would appear. Models must impose consistency, fixed probabilities, or restrictions on what information can be controlled.

Its conceptual value

It forces us to specify what we understand by cause, intervention and explanation. It also connects with the temporal consistency without requiring a person navigating a sharp curve.
